Understanding the news: The Tomb of Hetpet, Old Kingdom
The tomb is typical of its period in terms of its architectural design. It includes a passageway depicting scenes of a personalised afterlife for the owner who was a high ranking woman of the 5th Dynasty, and a shrine where offerings could be left for the tomb owner.
Hetpet was a priestess of Hathor, a sky goddess associated with fertility, women and childbirth. Her tomb is a demonstration of her wealth and position in Egyptian society - where men and women of any social standing could rise to high ranks via their association with the king which was often stressed in tomb decoration during the Old Kingdom.
The tombs of the Western cemetery have been known since the mid 1800s, but as is often the case, proper scientific excavations had not been carried out in the locale.
To explore the tomb of Perneb (also Dynasty 5) check out the resources at the Metropolitan Museum of Art: Including a great 20 minute video from 2004 in which curator Dorothea Arnold discusses the tomb in detail with other Egyptologists.

  1. Mildred Mosley Many of the most durable pigments are oxides; iron oxide (rust) for red and partially oxidized carbon (charcoal) for black, as examples. So if kept dry and away from sunlight they aren't going to change much, being already oxidized.
