Feature Object: Encaustic Mummy Portrait of a boy, Greco-Roman Period
Associate Professor of Classics Jim Higginbotham from the Bowdoin College Museum of Art (US) talks briefly about this beautiful example of Greco-Roman mummy portraiture which was acquired from a private collector in 2015.
The painted panel uses a special painting technique using pigment mixed with wax which was used during the Greco-Roman period. The wooden panel would have been placed in front of the face of the mummy and incorporated into the wrappings to replace the masks used in earlier periods as a representation of the deceased.
The mummy portrait demonstrates changing trends in art, religious/burial practices and evidence of trade from Europe.
