مبادرة جديدة من وزارة الاثار لحماية وادي الملوك
Stoppelaëre House in Luxor reopened on February 17, 2017 after restoration. Originally built in the 1950s, the house is important in its own right, having been designed by Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy (1900–1989), for French artist/restorer Alexandre Stoppelaëre who was Chief Restorer of Antiquities at the Department of Antiquities in Egypt; and is now part of the ongoing Theban Necropolis Preservation Initiative established in 2008 by the Ministry of Antiquities, the University of Basel and the Factum Foundation for Digital Technology in Conservation.

The house has been re-purposed as a new state of the art 3D scanning, archiving and training centre in Luxor, while preserving its original architectural flavour. If you have been reading my posts you will already know about the scanning of tombs such as KV62 (Tutankhamun) and KV17 (Seti I) by the Theban Necropolis Preservation Initiative (TNPI).

Another function of the house will be to gather and analyse materials that have been scattered - an ongoing problem for Egyptologists attempting to understand and reconstruct sites. It will also play an important role in engaging and educating Egyptians.

Salima Ikram, professor of Egyptology at the American University in Cairo, describes the training programme as a fantastic idea. “It will provide Egyptians with the most up-to-date technologies that will allow them to preserve and document their cultural heritage accurately and completely. This shows how international cooperation can further the preservation of heritage, not just for Egypt, but for the world," she said. (Ahram, 2017)
