Multi-Disciplinary Egyptology: The Gayer-Anderson Cat
Modern Egyptology involves using experts and technology from different scientific fields to understand the past. As new technologies become more readily available, it is possible for Egyptologists to re-examine objects for more information.
Here is a report about the Gayer-Anderson Cat from 2008
https://www.britishmuseum.org/PDF/BMTRB-2-Ambers.pdf
The examination revealed that the cat has changed its appearance after being 'restored' in the early 20th century and that it originally would have been of a polychrome appearance (see article for reconstructed colour schemes).
In this re-examination of the well known Gayer-Anderson Cat (EA 64391:1947,1011.1) currently held in the British Museum, Egyptologists used a variety of non-invasive/non-destructive techniques:
X-radiography - to examine the structure of the material (how it was manufactured)
X-ray fluorescence (XRF) - to identify what the material is (dating and origin)
Boroscopy - to examine the interior surface in detail (visual)
Raman spectroscopy - to identify chemicals present
Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy - Infrared examination
Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) - identification of biological compounds
Biological examination - using a microscope for visual identification

  1. morgan verse Cats are associated with goddesses like Hathor, Sekhmet, Bast and Pakhet. They are also associated with the Sun God Ra. I have never seen any reference linking them to Set. Let me know if you find any credible evidence to support the association.
