These wonderful drawings record a variety of artefacts, tools such as scrapers, manufacturing items such as loom weights, pottery vessels and votives. These drawings appeal to me not only from an academic perspective but as an artist.

I've recently been finding some wonderful old records from expeditions and surveys from the 20th century online in digital form and thought I would share some with you.

These days items can easily be photographed, or even scanned, but it is important to record them carefully to preserve their context/provenance so that they can be studied properly.

Knowing where items were found and what was nearby helps us to understand their purpose, when they were used, by whom, and how they fitted into a site as a whole.
